This week I found myself having a discussion with a client about goal setting and as it often happens my client asked, “How do I measure this goal when it’s so subjective?” This is a regular conversation I have with clients and it amazes me that with the vast amount of subjective goals we all achieve throughout our lives, we don’t have common methods for measuring all goals – even those pesky subjective ones. Measuring our goals is important to be able to track our progress and check in with adjustments and learning along the way to completion. When we set measurable goals we can ask others to hold us accountable to achieving them and of course there is also the understanding of success, how will you know when you get there? I also find that my clients lose track of where they started from and how far they have come and they can’t recognize their great successes. Finally, knowing when we have achieved a goal allows us to celebrate and then set new goals!
This is the sure fire method I use with my clients and hope it helps you too:
- Write your finish line story.
Describe in as much detail as possible what you will have, what the experience will be like, how others will respond, how you will feel when you reach your goal.
- Write you starting line story.
Again describing in as much detail as possible, what is your current state? What do you have today, what is that experience like, how do others respond, how do you feel today at the starting line?
- Identify the gap.
What are some of the milestones you will need to achieve along the journey to the finish line? What support will you need to create?
- Create a scale of 1 – 10.
Your starting line is 1 and the finish line is 10. Make some notes about what you might experience and accomplish at key marker points.
- Add a timeline.
Voila! Now you have a measurable system to turn even the most subjective goal into a clear and objectively measurable goal!
